Famous Golf Courses

Not too long ago we reminisced about the great game of golf. Today, we’re going to recap our trip down memory lane and discuss and idea that might just make your year! The first game of golf dates back to the year 1457 and was at a place called St. Andrews. St. Andrews is in Scotland and is widely considered to be the birthplace of the game. Many people claim that the original game was played earlier than 1457, way back in the year 1350. The truth is that golf did originate on Scotland’s east coast where rain is far less frequent. As Scotland is widely accepted as the birthplace of golf, it remains one of the most sought after locations for golf lovers everywhere. So, in honor of the “nation” of golf – we’ve come up with a great idea! Why not spend some time “backpack” golfing in as many places as possible!

Consider visiting the old course at St. Andrews is the most famous golf course in the world, then making your way to some of the other famous golf courses that are located all over Europe. There are presently six different golf courses is located in the town of St. Andrews alone! Recently a seventh golf course opened to the public. While the old course at St. Andrews has hosted more British Opens than any other golf course in the British Isles, it’s not the only world famous course. If you want to start with St. Andrews and make your way from there, you will have to plan ahead. St. Andrews has a lengthy waiting list for tee times. From St. Andrews, you will be able to “backpack” your way through Europe, golfing at as many beautiful and historic locations as possible.

Europe is chock full of beautiful courses that are both historic and challenging to play. But if “golf bagging” across Europe is out of your price range, or you simply find it impractical, consider a summer cross country trek. Start on the East Coast and make your way toward the Pacific. You will be able to find literally thousands of enjoyable and gorgeous golf courses and golf resorts in the United States. Contact your golf travel organizer today and learn more about the fun you could have hitting as many golf courses as you can in as short, or as long, a time as you can!
